Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic Food: How What You Eat Shapes Your Mind
In English
Food Feeds the Mind Too
Ayurveda teaches that food does not only nourish your body. It also shapes your thoughts, mood and behaviour. Just as the body has three doshas, the mind has three qualities called GUNAS: SATTVA, RAJAS and TAMAS.
The Three Gunas of the Mind
SATTVA: Clarity and Peace
Sattva brings clarity, calm, kindness and wisdom. A sattvic mind is loving, patient and positive, and does not get upset easily. It is the quality that wakes us up fresh each morning.
RAJAS: Activity and Drive
Rajas brings movement, ambition and energy. We need it to work and create. But too much rajas makes the mind restless, competitive, angry and stressed.
TAMAS: Rest and Heaviness
Tamas brings stability, heaviness and sleep. Without tamas, we could not sleep at night. But too much makes us dull, lazy, low and sluggish.
We all have all three. Health and happiness come from having more sattva, enough rajas for action, and enough tamas for rest.
The Three Types of Food
SATTVIC FOOD: For a Clear, Calm Mind
Light, fresh, natural and easy to digest.
- Fresh fruits and steamed vegetables
- Fresh vegetable juices
- Whole grains, moong dal
- Milk and ghee, which Ayurveda says build ojas (vital strength)
- Freshly cooked, home-made food
Effect: clarity, love, compassion, patience and forgiveness.
RAJASIC FOOD: For Action, but Too Much Brings Restlessness
Hot, spicy, salty and tempting.
- Very spicy curries, hot pickles and chutneys
- Salty snacks, chips and namkeen (the kind where "you can't eat just one")
- Too much tea, coffee and stimulants
Effect in excess: agitation, anger, impatience and cravings.
TAMASIC FOOD: Heavy and Dulling
Heavy, old and hard to digest.
- Stale, leftover or reheated food
- Very heavy, thick cheeses and deep-fried food
- Heavy red meats
- Overeating anything
Effect in excess: heaviness, laziness, low mood and too much sleep.
A Balanced View
Tamasic food is not always bad. A little heavy, grounding food can help someone who is too restless, scattered or unable to sleep. Like everything in Ayurveda, it is about balance and the right amount.
Gunas and Doshas
- Vata has more rajas (movement), and its sattva shows as clarity and lightness.
- Pitta has a lot of sattva, shown as knowledge and understanding, along with rajas.
- Kapha has more tamas (stability), and its sattva shows as love and forgiveness.
