Which Headache Do You Have? Ayurvedic Relief for Vata, Pitta and Kapha Headaches

In English

Not All Headaches Are the Same

Headaches can come from stress, digestion, sinus, eyes, neck tension, poor sleep, long screen hours, dehydration or even sleeping on two pillows. Ayurveda groups headaches into three types, and the location of the pain gives a big clue.

1. VATA Headache: Back of the Head

Signs

  • Pain at the back of the head, sometimes on the left side
  • Throbbing, moving pain that may spread forward
  • Comes with neck and shoulder tension, anxiety or constipation
  • Worse with movement and better with rest

Relief

  • Massage your neck and shoulders with warm sesame oil, then take a hot shower.
  • Drink water. Vata headaches are often linked to dehydration. ORS or lime water with a pinch of salt and sugar helps.
  • Nutmeg paste: mix ¼ tsp jaiphal powder with water and apply to the forehead for 30 minutes.
  • At night, rub a little sesame oil on the top of your head and the soles of your feet.
  • Keep bowels regular with Triphala at night, and follow a Vata-balancing diet.

2. PITTA Headache: Temples and Behind the Eyes

Signs

  • Pain at the temples or behind the eyes
  • Sharp, burning, shooting pain
  • Worse with bright light, hot sun, spicy or sour food
  • May come with acidity, nausea, burning eyes and irritability

Relief

  • Sandalwood paste: mix 1 tsp sandalwood powder with water and apply to the forehead and temples for 30 minutes.
  • Cooling tea: cumin-coriander tea, cooled to room temperature.
  • Eat something sweet: a sweet fruit can calm Pitta quickly.
  • Rub Brahmi or Bhringraj oil on the scalp and soles at night.
  • Wear a hat in the sun and avoid spicy, sour and fermented food.

3. KAPHA Headache: Forehead and Sinuses

Signs

  • Dull, heavy pain in the forehead and around the nose and cheeks
  • Worse in the morning or evening, and when you bend down
  • Common in winter and spring, with a blocked nose, cold or allergies

Relief

  • Steam inhalation with a few drops of eucalyptus oil or dry ginger in hot water. Cover your head with a towel and breathe in.
  • Warming paste: mix 1 tsp dry ginger powder (or cinnamon) with water and apply to the forehead. Keep it away from the eyes. Wash it off if it burns.
  • Use a saline nasal rinse or spray from the pharmacy to clear the sinuses.
  • Avoid cold food, dairy and sweets during a sinus headache.

Yoga for Headache-Prone People

  • Moon Salutation, Spinal Twist, Palm Tree pose, Bow and Boat pose
  • Avoid headstands, shoulder stands and Plough pose during headaches
  • Daily Alternate Nostril breathing and Bhramari

Daily Habits That Prevent Headaches

  • Drink enough water.
  • Don't skip meals.
  • Sleep 7 to 8 hours on one comfortable pillow.
  • Take screen breaks and keep a good posture at the computer.
  • Manage stress with meditation.

See a Doctor Urgently If

  • A sudden, severe "worst-ever" headache
  • Headache with fever and a stiff neck
  • Blurred vision, confusion, trouble speaking, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs
  • A headache that wakes you up at night or is worst in the morning with vomiting
  • A headache after a head injury
  • Headaches that are getting more frequent or more severe, or last more than a couple of days
