How to Take Ayurvedic Herbs the Right Way: A Beginner's Guide
In English
Why "How" Matters as Much as "What"
Many people buy an Ayurvedic herb, swallow it with any drink and wonder why it doesn't help. Ayurveda says how you take an herb matters as much as which herb you take.
1. Choose Whole Herbs
Ayurveda prefers whole herbs, whole foods and whole plants. A plant works as a complete package, and a single isolated chemical is not the same thing.
- Choose organic, fresh, clean herbs.
- Buy from a trusted source that tests for purity and heavy metals.
- Store them in airtight jars, away from heat, light and moisture.
2. Understand "Parts" in Herbal Recipes
Ayurvedic mixtures are often written in parts instead of grams. Pick one measure and use it for every herb in the mix.
Example: a recipe says Herb A 2 parts, Herb B 3 parts, Herb C ¼ part.
- If you measure in teaspoons: 2 tsp Herb A + 3 tsp Herb B + ¼ tsp Herb C.
- For a bigger batch, use tablespoons in the same ratio.
The parts tell you how to mix the herbs, not how much to take. Your practitioner will tell you your dose.
3. The Secret Ingredient: Anupana (the Carrier)
In Ayurveda, herbs are usually taken with a carrier, called anupana. It helps the body absorb the herb and carries it to the right tissues.
- Warm water: the everyday default
- Warm milk: nourishing, good for Vata and Pitta
- Honey: good for Kapha. Never cook or heat honey, and don't give it to babies under 1 year.
- Ghee: carries herbs deep into the tissues, good for Vata and Pitta
- Aloe vera juice: cooling, good for Pitta
If no carrier is mentioned, use warm water.
4. Taste Is Part of the Medicine
Ayurveda believes taste starts the healing: your tongue sends signals to your digestion. So herbs are traditionally taken as a powder or tea, not hidden in capsules. If you are travelling or can't bear the taste, capsules are better than skipping your herbs.
5. How Long to Take a Remedy
- The general rule: use it until your symptoms settle, which can take a few days to a few months.
- A problem you have had for years won't disappear in a week. Be patient.
- Herbs alone are not enough. Also look at your diet, sleep, daily routine and exercise, the habits that caused the problem.
- If you are regular with remedies and lifestyle changes and still don't improve, see your doctor.
Stay Safe with Herbs
- Natural doesn't always mean safe for everyone. Ask a qualified practitioner about your dose.
- Tell your doctor about herbs you take, especially if you are on BP, diabetes, thyroid or blood-thinning medicines.
- Be extra careful during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and with children and elderly people.
- Stop and get advice if you notice a rash, stomach upset or anything unusual.
