Pranayama for Beginners: How Your Breath Controls Your Mind
In English
Breath and Mind Are Connected
Have you noticed that when you are angry or anxious, your breathing becomes fast and uneven? And when you are calm and happy, it becomes slow and smooth? Ayurveda says breathing is the body's side of thinking, and thinking is the mind's side of breathing. Change one, and you change the other.
What Is PRANAYAMA?
PRANA means life energy, and breath is its physical form. AYAMA means to control or extend. So Pranayama means "the art of guiding your breath". The ancient sages found that by calming the breath, we can calm the mind.
The Secret of the Two Nostrils
Try this: close one nostril, breathe, then close the other. One side usually feels more open. This switches naturally every hour or two.
- Right nostril breath is traditionally linked with heat, action, logic and focus.
- Left nostril breath is traditionally linked with coolness, calm, creativity and feeling.
Pranayama helps balance these two energies, leaving you calm, clear and centred.
Start Here: ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHING (Anulom Vilom / Nadi Shodhana)
This is one of the simplest and most effective breathing practices, and it suits all body types, especially Vata.
How to Do It
- Sit comfortably cross-legged on the floor with a straight spine, or on the front edge of a chair with your feet flat.
- Close your right nostril with your right thumb. Breathe in slowly through the left nostril, filling your belly, not your chest.
- Pause gently for a moment.
- Close your left nostril with your ring and little fingers, release the thumb and breathe out through the right nostril.
- Now breathe in through the right, pause, close it, and breathe out through the left.
- That is one round. Continue for 5 to 10 minutes.
Benefits
- Calms the mind and reduces stress and worry
- Balances both sides of the body and mind
- Helps you feel centred before meditation or sleep
Golden Rules for All Pranayama
- Practise on an empty stomach or 2 to 3 hours after a meal.
- Breathe gently, never with strain.
- If you feel dizzy or uncomfortable, stop and breathe normally.
- It is best to learn from an experienced teacher first.
