Hiccups Won't Stop? Simple Ayurvedic Tricks That Really Work
In English
What Causes Hiccups?
Hiccups happen when the diaphragm, the big breathing muscle below the lungs, starts to spasm. Common triggers:
- Eating too fast or too much
- Fizzy drinks and spicy food
- Gas, bloating or constipation
- Sudden excitement or stress
Most hiccups go away on their own within minutes. These tricks help them stop faster.
1. Hold Your Breath
Take a deep breath, hold it down in your belly for as long as is comfortable, then breathe out slowly. Repeat a few times.
2. Breathe Into a Paper Bag
Hold a paper bag (never plastic) loosely over your nose and mouth and breathe slowly in and out for 1 minute. Breathing back in your own carbon dioxide helps relax the diaphragm.
Do not use this method if you have heart or lung problems, or feel dizzy.
3. Alternate Nostril Breathing With a Swallow
- Close your right nostril and breathe in through the left.
- Hold for a moment, and swallow.
- Close your left nostril and breathe out through the right.
- Repeat, starting with the right nostril.
Continue for up to 5 minutes.
4. Sweet Kitchen Tricks
- A teaspoon of honey or sugar, held on the tongue and slowly swallowed
- Sip a glass of water slowly without stopping
- Chew a few saunf or elaichi seeds slowly
Do not give honey to babies under 1 year.
5. Check Your Digestion
If hiccups come often, look for gas, bloating or constipation. Eat slowly, avoid fizzy drinks, and keep your bowels regular with warm water, fibre and Triphala at night.
See a Doctor If
- Hiccups last more than 48 hours
- They stop you from eating, drinking or sleeping
- They come with chest pain, breathlessness, vomiting or stomach pain
- The person has heart, kidney or nerve problems
Long-lasting hiccups can sometimes be linked to an underlying illness.
Try This Today
Next time hiccups start, try holding your breath and swallowing three times, then sip water slowly.
