What Is IBS?

IBS is a common condition with stomach pain or cramps, bloating, gas, and bowel habits that swing between loose motions and constipation. It is often worse with stress.

Ayurveda explains IBS as VATA pushing PITTA into the colon: restless, irregular movement (Vata) combined with heat and irritation (Pitta). So the aim is to calm Vata, cool Pitta and steady the gut.

1. Isabgol With Fresh Curd

Take 1 tsp isabgol (psyllium husk) with ½ cup fresh curd about an hour after dinner. Isabgol helps both loose and hard stools by giving them a steady, soft form.

Start with a smaller amount and drink enough water during the day.

2. Flaxseed Tea

Boil 1 tsp flaxseed (alsi) in a cup of water and drink it at bedtime. It soothes and lubricates the colon.

3. Eat to Calm Vata and Pitta

  • Favour: warm, soft, freshly cooked food such as khichdi, moong dal, rice, stewed apple, cooked vegetables and a little ghee
  • Avoid: very spicy, fried, sour and fermented food, raw salads, cold drinks, too much tea and coffee, and alcohol
  • Eat at regular times and don't skip meals.
  • Eat slowly and chew well.

4. Soothing Teas

  • CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel) after meals
  • Saunf chewed after food to ease cramps and gas

5. Find Your Triggers

Keep a simple food and mood diary for 2 weeks. Many people find certain foods (like milk, heavy beans or fried food) or stressful days make symptoms worse.

6. Calm the Mind, Calm the Gut

The gut and mind are closely linked. Stress is one of the biggest IBS triggers.

  • Alternate Nostril breathing and Bhramari daily
  • Meditation: So-Hum or Empty Bowl
  • A warm oil massage on the belly (clockwise) and feet
  • Gentle yoga: Pawanmuktasana, Cat-Cow, Child's pose
  • Regular sleep
