Kitchen First Aid: Ayurvedic Care for Minor Burns, Insect Bites and Stings

In English

Small Accidents Happen

Touching a hot pan, a spark of oil, a mosquito bite or a bee sting: these little accidents happen at home all the time. Ayurveda sees both burns and bites as Pitta (heat and irritation), so the answer is to cool and soothe.

This guide is only for SMALL, minor household burns and ordinary bites. Serious cases need a doctor.

PART 1: MINOR BURNS

Step 1: Cool It Immediately

Hold the burn under cool (not ice-cold) running water for 10 to 20 minutes. This is the most important step.

Do not put ice directly on a burn, as it can damage the skin further.

Step 2: Do NOT Use Butter, Oil or Toothpaste

Many people put butter, ghee, oil or toothpaste on burns. Do not. Fatty things trap heat and make the burn worse.

Step 3: Soothe With a Cooling Paste

Once the burning has stopped, and only if the skin is unbroken with no blisters, gently apply:

  • Fresh aloe vera gel alone, or
  • Aloe gel + a pinch of sandalwood powder for extra cooling

Step 4: Coriander (Dhaniya) Juice

Blend a handful of fresh coriander leaves with ⅓ cup water and strain. Coriander is very cooling. Apply some of the pulp around the area, on unbroken skin only.

Step 5: Protect It

Keep the burn clean. If needed, cover it loosely with a clean, non-stick dressing. Do not burst blisters.

Get Medical Help Right Away If

  • The burn is larger than your palm
  • The burn is on the face, hands, feet, joints or private parts
  • The skin looks white, leathery or charred, or there are large blisters
  • It is a chemical or electrical burn
  • The person is a baby, child or elderly person
  • You see signs of infection: increasing redness, pus or fever

PART 2: INSECT BITES AND STINGS

Step 1: Remove the Sting

For a bee sting, scrape the sting out sideways with a fingernail or card. Wash the area with soap and water.

Step 2: Soothing Remedies

  • Coriander pulp: blend fresh coriander leaves with a little water and apply the pulp to the bite. It calms itching and burning.
  • Sandalwood and turmeric paste: mix ½ tsp sandalwood + ½ tsp turmeric with water and apply.
  • Neem paste or neem oil: mix neem powder with water, apply for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse. Neem oil should be diluted in coconut or sesame oil.
  • Coconut water: drinking a little is cooling and refreshing.

Step 3: Prevention

Neem oil mixed with coconut oil is used across India as a natural insect repellent. Rub a little on exposed skin before going outdoors.
