Best Yoga Poses for Your Dosha: Vata, Pitta and Kapha Explained

In English

Each Dosha Has a Home in the Body

Ayurveda says each dosha has a main seat in the body. Yoga poses that stretch and open that area help bring that dosha back into balance.

  • VATA: the pelvis and lower belly
  • PITTA: the solar plexus (middle belly, around the navel)
  • KAPHA: the chest and lungs

Yoga for VATA: Grounding and Calming

Poses that stretch the pelvis and lower back calm Vata:

  • Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend)
  • Ardha Matsyendrasana (Spinal Twist)
  • Marjariasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow)
  • Bhujangasana (Cobra)
  • Shalabhasana (Locust)
  • Ushtrasana (Camel)
  • Leg lifts (lying on your back)
  • Surya Namaskar, done slowly

Breath: 12 rounds of Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing).
Style: slow and steady. Hold poses gently and finish with a long Shavasana.

Yoga for PITTA: Cooling and Relaxing

Poses that stretch around the navel calm Pitta:

  • Matsyasana (Fish)
  • Naukasana (Boat)
  • Ushtrasana (Camel)
  • Shalabhasana (Locust)
  • Dhanurasana (Bow)
  • Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutation)

Avoid: Ayurveda advises Pitta types to avoid headstand, shoulder stand, plow and other upside-down poses, which build heat in the head.
Breath: Shitali (cooling breath through a rolled tongue). If you can't roll your tongue, do Sheetkari (breathing in through the teeth).
Style: relaxed, non-competitive, in a cool room. Don't practise in the midday heat.

Yoga for KAPHA: Energising and Opening

Poses that open the chest and lungs calm Kapha:

  • Surya Namaskar, done briskly
  • Setu Bandhasana (Bridge)
  • Shalabhasana (Locust)
  • Tadasana (Palm Tree)
  • Simhasana (Lion pose, with tongue out and a strong "haa" breath)
  • Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Halasana (Plow), only for experienced practitioners with a teacher

Breath: Bhastrika (bellows breath) or Kapalbhati. Start with short rounds of 15 to 20 breaths and build up slowly.
Style: active and warming. Move more and rest less.

Golden Rules for Everyone

  • Learn new poses from a qualified yoga teacher. Pictures and text can't correct your alignment.
  • Practise on an empty stomach, 2 to 3 hours after a meal.
  • Never force a pose. Gentle effort and steady breath are the key.
  • Finish every session with Shavasana, then pranayama and meditation.

Safety First

  • Avoid shoulder stand, plow and headstand if you have neck or back problems, high BP, heart disease, glaucoma, or are pregnant or menstruating.
  • Avoid Bhastrika and Kapalbhati if you have high BP, heart disease, epilepsy, a hernia, recent belly surgery, or are pregnant.
  • Stop if you feel pain, dizziness or breathlessness.

Try This Today
