Calm Your Anxious Mind Naturally: 7 Ayurvedic Remedies for Anxiety and Worry

In English

Anxiety Is a Vata Imbalance

Racing thoughts, worry, fear and trouble sleeping often go together. Ayurveda sees anxiety mainly as excess VATA (air and movement) in the nervous system. Vata is light, cold and restless, so the cure is to bring in the opposite: warmth, steadiness, routine and grounding.

7 Simple Ways to Calm Vata and Anxiety

1. Warm Oil Massage (Abhyanga)

One of the most calming things you can do. Rub warm sesame oil (or coconut oil if you feel hot) over your whole body, head to toe, then take a warm bath. If anxiety affects your sleep, do it before bed.

Short on time? Just rub a little oil on your scalp and the soles of your feet.

2. Calming Almond Milk

Soak 10 raw almonds overnight. In the morning, peel them and blend with 1 cup warm milk, a pinch of dry ginger, a small pinch of nutmeg and a few strands of saffron. Nourishing and soothing.

3. Relaxing Ginger Bath

Add ⅓ cup ginger powder and ⅓ cup baking soda to a tub of warm water and soak for 10 to 15 minutes. No tub? Use a warm foot soak instead.

4. Calming Herbal Tea

Ayurveda traditionally uses Tagar (Indian valerian) and Musta to calm Vata. Ask a practitioner before using them, as they may interact with sleep or anxiety medicines.

5. The Calming Pressure Point

Make a loose fist with your left hand. Where your middle finger touches the palm is the point. Press it firmly with your right thumb for 1 minute while breathing slowly.

6. Rest in Shavasana

Lie on your back, arms by your sides, palms up. Let your whole body go heavy and relaxed for 5 to 10 minutes.

7. So-Hum Meditation

Sit quietly, rest your attention gently at the top of your head, and silently repeat "So" as you breathe in and "Hum" as you breathe out.

Daily Habits That Help

  • Keep a fixed routine for waking, eating and sleeping.
  • Eat warm, cooked, grounding food. Avoid skipping meals.
  • Cut down on caffeine, late nights and too much screen time.
  • Practise Alternate Nostril breathing and Bhramari humming.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Sharing your worries makes them lighter.

When to See a Doctor

Everyone feels worried sometimes. But please see a doctor or counsellor if:

  • You have chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, a racing heart or dizziness with your anxiety
  • You get panic attacks, sudden waves of intense fear
  • Anxiety is long-lasting or makes you avoid people, places or work

Ayurveda can support you alongside proper care. You do not have to handle it alone.

Try This Today

Before bed tonight, massage warm oil into your feet, drink a cup of warm almond milk, and do 5 minutes of So-Hum.
