Healing with Colours, Aromas and Copper: Ayurveda Beyond the Kitchen
In English
Healing Through All Five Senses
Ayurveda links our five senses to the five elements:
- Hearing (Space)
- Touch (Air)
- Sight and colour (Fire)
- Taste (Water)
- Smell (Earth)
So balance doesn't come only from food. The colours you wear, the fragrances around you and even the vessels you use can gently support your dosha.
Part 1: Colours for Your Dosha
Choose these colours for your clothes, bedsheets, cushions and walls.
VATA: Warm and Gentle
Best: warm pastels, sunny yellow, soft green, touches of red and orange.
Go easy on: too much dark blue, brown and black, and very loud, flashy colours.
PITTA: Cool and Soft
Best: blue, purple, violet, blue-green, white and silver.
Go easy on: red, orange, too much yellow or gold, and black.
KAPHA: Bright and Lively
Best: red, orange, yellow and gold, to beat heaviness and laziness.
Go easy on: dull, heavy shades like dark blue, too much green or white.
What Each Colour Does
- RED: warming and energising. Calms Vata and Kapha, but too much heats Pitta.
- ORANGE: warm and strengthening. Good for Vata and Kapha.
- YELLOW: linked to understanding and clarity. Balances Vata and Kapha.
- GREEN: fresh and calming for the heart and emotions. Soothes Pitta.
- BLUE: cooling and peaceful. Excellent for Pitta.
- PURPLE: linked to awareness and lightness. Calms Pitta and Kapha.
- GOLD: warming, for Vata and Kapha. SILVER: cooling, for Pitta.
Part 2: Aromas for Your Dosha
Fragrance travels directly to the brain and can quickly change your mood.
VATA: Sweet, Warm, Grounding
Orange, clove, cardamom, lavender, frankincense (loban), heena (mehendi) attar
PITTA: Cool, Sweet, Calming
Sandalwood (chandan), khus, jasmine (mogra), rose, mint, lemongrass, fennel
KAPHA: Warm, Sharp, Uplifting
Eucalyptus, cinnamon, tulsi (basil), rosemary, camphor, myrrh
Simple Ways to Use Aromas
- Light a natural incense stick or dhoop during meditation.
- Put a few drops of essential oil in a diffuser or a bowl of hot water.
- Dab a little attar on your wrists.
- Keep fresh flowers like mogra or roses in your room.
Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before putting them on skin. Never swallow them. Keep camphor and oils away from small children. People with asthma should avoid smoky incense and strong fragrances.
Part 3: Copper and Iron in Daily Life
Copper Vessel Water (Tamra Jal)
A traditional Indian habit: fill a clean copper jug or glass with drinking water at night and drink it in the morning. Ayurveda says copper helps reduce excess Kapha.
- Use it for plain water only. Never store lemon water, juice, buttermilk or milk in copper.
- Clean it regularly with lemon and salt, then rinse well.
- Choose pure food-grade copper from a trusted source.
- Use it in moderation, about 1 to 2 glasses a day. Your other water can come from steel or clay pots.
- People with Wilson's disease or liver problems should avoid copper water.
Cooking in Iron Pans (Lohe ki Kadhai)
Cooking in a cast-iron kadhai or tawa adds a little natural iron to food, which helps many women and vegetarians with low iron. Men and people with high iron levels don't usually need extra iron.
A Word About Gems and Metal Waters
Traditional texts also describe healing with gemstones and gold or silver. These are matters of tradition and personal belief. Never drink water in which stones or jewellery have been soaked, because some stones and metals can release harmful substances.
Important
- Colours, aromas and copper water are supportive habits, not treatments for illness.
- Jaundice in a newborn needs a doctor and proper hospital light therapy, not home colour remedies.
