So-Hum Meditation and the Art of Witnessing: Mindfulness for Everyday Life
In English
Two Simple Practices for a Calm Mind
Today we learn two beautiful practices. So-Hum is a sitting meditation using a silent sound with the breath. Double-Arrowed Attention is a way to stay mindful while you go about your day.
1. SO-HUM MEDITATION
The Meaning of So-Hum
- SO means "That", the Divine, the universal life force.
- HUM means "I", the small individual self or ego.
When we breathe in, we take in life. When we breathe out, we let go. So with "So" on the in-breath we invite in life energy, and with "Hum" on the out-breath we release ego, worry and limitation.
Notice that a baby's life begins with an in-breath, and life ends with an out-breath. Every breath is a small cycle of life.
How to Do It
- Sit comfortably with a straight back and close your eyes.
- Let your breath flow naturally. Do not control it.
- As you breathe in, silently say "Sooo..." in your mind.
- As you breathe out, silently say "Hummm..." in your mind.
- Do not say the words out loud. Let the sound, breath and awareness flow together.
- Continue for 10 to 15 minutes.
What It Brings
- Thoughts slow down and the mind becomes still.
- A feeling of expansion, peace and joy.
- Some people experience a soft sense of light between the eyebrows.
2. DOUBLE-ARROWED ATTENTION (Witnessing)
Meditation With Open Eyes
This practice, called Samyag Darshan in Vedic science, means looking outward and inward at the same time. You can do it anywhere: at work, while walking or talking with someone.
The Two Arrows
- ARROW 1 goes OUT: your attention goes to what you are looking at, such as a tree, a flower or a person.
- ARROW 2 goes IN: at the same moment, a second arrow of attention goes inward to your heart, watching yourself as you look.
In other words, watch the watcher. When you look at your colleague, also notice what you are feeling inside. When you hear a harsh word, also notice your own reaction.
Why It Helps
- You respond calmly instead of reacting in anger or fear.
- You feel more connected to people and nature around you.
- Your work and relationships become a kind of meditation.
Try This Today
Morning: sit for 10 minutes of So-Hum. During the day: when you talk to someone, gently notice your own feelings at the same time.
