Tired Screen Eyes? Simple Ayurvedic Eye Care and Eye Exercises
In English
Your Eyes Work Hard Every Day
Phones, laptops, TV, bright light and late nights: our eyes rarely get a break. Ayurveda says the eyes are ruled by Pitta (fire), so burning, redness and tired eyes are signs of too much heat and strain. Here is a simple daily routine to keep your eyes fresh, relaxed and strong.
1. Morning Cool Water Splash
When you wash your face in the morning, fill your mouth with cool water and hold it, then gently splash cool, clean water over your closed eyes several times. This traditional practice cools the eyes from inside and outside.
2. Ayurvedic Eye Exercises
Sit comfortably, remove your glasses, and keep your head still. Move only your eyes:
- Blink rapidly 10 to 15 times.
- Look up and down 5 times.
- Look side to side 5 times.
- Look diagonally, top-left to bottom-right, 5 times.
- Look diagonally, top-right to bottom-left, 5 times.
- Roll your eyes in a circle clockwise, then anticlockwise, 5 times each.
- Near-far focus: hold your index finger at arm's length and slowly bring it towards the point between your eyebrows, following it with your eyes.
- Look at the tip of your nose, then up between your eyebrows.
- Squeeze your eyes shut tightly, then release.
3. Palming: Instant Relief
Rub your palms together briskly until warm, then cup them gently over your closed eyes without pressing. Rest for 1 to 2 minutes and enjoy the warm darkness. Do this after the exercises or anytime your eyes feel tired.
4. Trataka: Gazing at a Ghee Lamp
Light a small ghee diya with a pure cotton wick. Sit 2 to 3 feet away, remove your glasses, and gently gaze at the flame for 1 to 2 minutes. Then close your eyes and see the afterglow. This traditional practice is said to improve the brightness and focus of the eyes.
Do not strain. Stop if your eyes water a lot or hurt. People with epilepsy or eye conditions should skip this practice.
5. Cooling Care for Burning Eyes (Pitta)
- Place cotton pads soaked in cool rose water over closed eyes for 10 minutes.
- Rest cool cucumber slices on your eyelids.
- Rub a little castor oil or ghee on the soles of your feet at bedtime. Ayurveda links the feet and eyes, and this is said to cool the eyes.
6. Screen and Reading Habits
- The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Use an anti-glare screen and good lighting.
- Read sitting up with a straight back, not lying down.
- Blink often. We blink much less while staring at screens.
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours. Sleep is the best eye medicine.
7. Exercise and Food
- 12 rounds of Sun Salutation improve circulation to the whole body, including the eyes.
- Eat carrots, leafy greens, amla, almonds and a little ghee.
- Triphala taken internally is a traditional Ayurvedic eye tonic.
Important Safety Notes
- Never put homemade liquids, oils, ghee or herbal water directly into your eyes. Only use sterile eye drops recommended by a doctor.
- Some market kajal and surma contain lead. Avoid using them, especially on babies and children.
- See an eye doctor for sudden vision changes, eye pain, flashes or floaters, a red eye with discharge, or an eye injury.
- Get your eyes checked every 1 to 2 years, especially if you have diabetes or high blood pressure.
