What Is Real Health? The Ayurvedic Answer May Surprise You

Health Is More Than "Not Being Sick"

Most of us think we are healthy if we are not ill. Ayurveda goes deeper. It says health is a state of balance between body, mind and soul. You can have no disease and still feel tired, low or restless. That is not full health.

The Four Pillars of a Healthy Body

1. Balanced DOSHAS

The three energies, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, must stay in their natural balance. Balance keeps you well. Imbalance opens the door to illness.

2. Strong DHATUS (Body Tissues)

Ayurveda names seven body tissues that are built one after another from the food you digest:

  1. Rasa: plasma, the nourishing fluid
  2. Rakta: blood, which carries oxygen
  3. Mamsa: muscle, which gives strength
  4. Meda: fat, which keeps the body warm and oiled
  5. Asthi: bone, which gives structure
  6. Majja: marrow and nerves, which carry messages
  7. Shukra/Artava: reproductive tissue, the essence of all

Each tissue feeds the next. If digestion is weak, every tissue after it gets less nourishment.

3. Clean Removal of MALAS (Wastes)

The body must remove its three wastes, stool, urine and sweat, in the right amount and on time.

4. A Healthy AGNI (Digestive Fire)

Agni is your digestive fire. It breaks down food, feeds your tissues, supports immunity and burns away germs and toxins. Ayurveda says, "A person is as old as their Agni." Strong Agni means long life and good energy. Weak Agni means low energy and illness.

The Goal: SWASTHA

When the body is balanced and the senses, mind and spirit are clear and calm, Ayurveda calls it SWASTHA, which means "totally happy within oneself." That is true health.

Try This Today
