Bad Breath? Fix It From the Inside With These Simple Ayurvedic Remedies
In English
Bad Breath Often Starts in the Stomach
Brushing alone does not always fix bad breath. Ayurveda says it is often a sign of weak digestion. When food is not digested well, it ferments and forms Ama (toxins), which has a foul smell.
The Mirror Test
Stand in front of a mirror and stick out your tongue. A thick coating at the back of your tongue is a sign of Ama, and often the reason for bad breath.
The aim is to strengthen your digestive fire (Agni) so it burns away the Ama.
Diet Changes
- Avoid heavy meals.
- Cut down on cold drinks, ice cream, cheese and curd, which slow digestion.
- Eat warm, freshly cooked, light food.
Kitchen Remedies
1. Roasted Saunf and Jeera Mukhwas
After lunch and dinner, chew 1 tsp of roasted fennel and cumin seeds mixed half-and-half. It aids digestion and freshens breath naturally.
2. Chew Cardamom
Slowly chew 1 or 2 cardamom (elaichi) seeds. Cardamom supports digestion and gives instant freshness.
3. CCF Tea After Meals
Steep ¼ to ½ tsp each of cumin, coriander and fennel in a cup of hot water. Drink after meals.
Oral Care the Ayurvedic Way
- Scrape your tongue every morning with a steel tongue cleaner.
- Brush after meals with a neem or herbal toothpaste, and floss daily.
- Oil pulling: swish a spoon of sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for a few minutes, then spit it out.
- Gum massage: gently massage your gums with a little neem oil mixed with coconut oil. Spit out; never swallow.
Yoga and Breathing
- Lion Pose (Simhasana): open the mouth wide, stick out the tongue and breathe out with a "ha" sound.
- Yoga Mudra and gentle forward bends
- Shitali (cooling breath)
When to See a Doctor or Dentist
If bad breath continues despite good oral care, see a dentist or doctor. Bad breath can sometimes be linked to gum disease, tooth decay, sinus infection, acid reflux, diabetes or other conditions that need proper treatment.
