What Is a Boil?

A boil is a painful, red, pus-filled lump under the skin, usually caused by an infection around a hair root. Ayurveda links boils mainly to excess Pitta (heat) in the blood, often along with:

  • Long-term constipation
  • A sluggish liver
  • Too much spicy, oily or fried food
Important: If you get boils again and again, get your blood sugar checked. Repeated boils can be a sign of diabetes.

Soothing Remedies to Apply

1. Neem Paste

Mix a little neem powder with warm water into a paste and apply it to the boil. Neem is a traditional skin cleanser. You can also use neem oil diluted in coconut oil.

2. Triphala Wash

Boil 1 tsp Triphala in 1 cup of water. Let it cool, then gently wash the area with it and let it dry.

3. Cooling Sandalwood and Turmeric Paste

Mix ½ tsp red sandalwood (raktachandan) + ½ tsp turmeric with warm water and apply. It cools the heat and soothes the skin.

4. Bring It to a Head

To help a boil ripen and drain naturally:

  • A warm compress (clean cloth dipped in warm water) for 10 minutes, 3 or 4 times a day, or
  • A warm poultice of cooked onion wrapped in clean cloth, or
  • A paste of ½ tsp dry ginger + ½ tsp turmeric with water
Never squeeze, pierce or cut a boil yourself. This can spread infection deeper.

Heal From Inside

  • Pitta-cooling diet: avoid spicy, fried, sour and fermented food.
  • Keep your bowels regular: eat fibre, drink warm water and take a spoon of ghee. Triphala or Amla at night is a gentle traditional choice.
  • Neem, turmeric and Manjistha are used in Ayurveda to cleanse the blood. Take them internally only on a practitioner's advice.

Hygiene Tips

  • Wash your hands before and after touching a boil.
  • Do not share towels, razors or clothes.
  • Keep the area clean and dry, and wear loose cotton clothes.

See a Doctor If

  • The boil is on the face (especially near the nose or lips), spine, groin or armpit
  • It is very large, very painful, or not improving after a week
  • You have fever, chills or feel unwell
  • You see red streaks spreading from the boil
  • You have diabetes, a weak immune system, or boils keep coming back
  • Several boils join together (carbuncle)
