Cooling and Heating Breaths: Shitali, Bhastrika and Surya Bhedi Explained
In English
Your Breath Can Cool You Down or Warm You Up
Just as food can be heating or cooling, so can your breath. Ayurveda uses special breathing exercises to cool down excess Pitta or warm up and energise heavy Kapha.
1. SHITALI: The Cooling Breath (Best for PITTA)
Shitali means "cooling." It is perfect for hot summer days, anger, irritation and a hot, burning feeling.
How to Do It
- Sit comfortably with a straight back.
- Roll your tongue into a tube and stick it out slightly.
- Breathe in slowly through the rolled tongue. Feel the cool air.
- Close your mouth, swallow, and breathe out gently through the nose.
- Repeat 10 to 16 times.
Cannot roll your tongue? Lightly close your teeth, press your tongue against them and breathe in through the teeth instead. This is called Sitkari.
Benefits
- Cools the whole body and mind
- Helps with thirst and a hot, burning feeling in the throat or eyes
- Calms anger and irritation
2. BHASTRIKA: The Breath of Fire (Best for KAPHA)
Bhastrika means "bellows," like the bellows that fan a fire. It warms the body, energises the mind and opens the lungs.
How to Do It
- Sit tall with a straight spine.
- Breathe in naturally through the nose.
- Breathe out actively and with a little force through the nose, pulling the belly in.
- Start slowly, then pick up speed, like a train leaving the station.
- Do one round of 20 to 30 breaths, then rest for a minute. Beginners should start with 1 or 2 rounds.
Benefits
- Strengthens the lungs and improves breathing capacity
- Heats the body and clears heaviness
- Wakes up a sleepy, foggy mind
Caution: Avoid Bhastrika if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, heart disease, epilepsy, hernia, recent surgery or a serious lung condition. People with asthma should check with their doctor first. Stop if you feel dizzy.
3. SURYA BHEDI: Right Nostril Breathing (For Warmth and Energy)
Surya means "sun." Breathing through the right nostril is traditionally said to bring heat and energy. It is helpful on cold winter mornings and for Kapha people.
How to Do It
- Sit comfortably.
- Gently close your left nostril with your ring and little fingers.
- Breathe in and out through the right nostril only.
- Repeat 10 times.
Pitta people and anyone feeling hot should skip this one.
Quick Guide

- Feeling heavy, sleepy or congested? Try Bhastrika or Surya Bhedi.
