Sunburn and Tanning: Cooling Ayurvedic Remedies and Smart Sun Protection
In English
What Is Sunburn?
Sunburn is inflammation of the skin from too much sun (UV rays). It causes redness, pain, heat, peeling and sometimes blisters. Repeated sunburn causes early wrinkles and raises the risk of skin cancer.
Ayurveda calls it a PITTA (fire) condition. Pitta people with fairer, sensitive skin burn more easily. Harsh chemical soaps and perfumes can also make skin more sensitive.
Cooling Remedies for Sunburn
1. Fresh Aloe Vera Gel
The best natural soother. Apply pure aloe vera gel, or rub fresh gel straight from an aloe leaf, gently over the area.
2. Cool Milk Compress
Dip a clean cloth or gauze in cool milk and place it on the burnt skin for a few minutes. Cool water works too.
3. Coconut Oil
Once the skin has cooled down, a little pure coconut oil soothes and moisturises.
4. Cold Pack
Wrap ice or a frozen pack in a cloth and hold it on the area for a minute or two at a time. Never put ice directly on the skin.
5. Sandalwood Paste
Mix sandalwood powder with cool water or rose water and apply gently. Add a pinch of turmeric if you like, but it may stain skin yellow for a day or two.
6. Kitchen Coolers
- Fresh cream (malai), a thin layer on mild sunburn
- Mashed lettuce or cucumber pulp
Do not apply pastes or creams on broken or blistered skin. Do not burst blisters.
Cool From Inside
- Drink plenty of water and coconut water.
- Eat cooling foods: cucumber, watermelon, sweet fruits.
- Avoid spicy, fermented food, alcohol and saunas until healed.
Prevent Sunburn
- Avoid strong sun between 10 AM and 3 PM.
- Limit direct sun time, especially at the beach or in the hills.
- Wear a hat, sunglasses and loose cotton clothes covering arms and legs.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or more) on exposed skin, and reapply every 2 hours.
- Traditional oils like neem oil (mixed with sesame or coconut oil) and coconut oil nourish the skin before and after sun, but they do not replace sunscreen.
See a Doctor If
- There are large blisters or the burn covers a big area
- You have fever, chills, dizziness, nausea or confusion. This may be heat stroke and needs urgent care.
- A baby or young child gets sunburnt
- You see signs of infection: pus, increasing redness or swelling
