Breathe Your Way to Calm

Some breathing exercises cool and some heat. But two special ones mainly calm and balance: Bhramari (the humming bee breath) and Ujjayi (the victorious breath). Both are easy to learn and good for everyone.

1. BHRAMARI: The Humming Bee Breath

Bhramari comes from bhramar, the black bee. You make a soft humming sound like a bee while you breathe. The gentle vibration is like sound therapy for the brain and nerves.

How to Do It

  1. Sit comfortably with a straight back. Keep your teeth apart and lips gently closed.
  2. Lightly touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
  3. Take a deep breath into your belly through the nose.
  4. Breathe out slowly while making a long, low humming sound, "mmmmm."
  5. Repeat 10 times.
Advanced: you can also hum softly while breathing in, a higher sound, like a female bee, and hum a deeper sound while breathing out, like a male bee.

Benefits

  • Quickly calms an anxious or busy mind
  • Traditionally said to make the voice sweet and melodious
  • Soothing vibration for the head, throat and chest
  • Great before sleep or when you feel stressed

2. UJJAYI: The Victorious Breath

Ujjayi means "victorious." It creates a soft, ocean-like whispering sound in the throat. It is good for all three doshas and brings a deep feeling of joy and steadiness.

How to Do It

  1. Sit in Vajrasana (on your heels) or cross-legged, hands on knees, palms facing up.
  2. Keep your head, neck and chest in a straight line. Lower your chin slightly toward your chest.
  3. Gently tighten the back of your throat, as if you are about to whisper.
  4. Breathe in slowly and deeply into your belly through the nose. You will hear a soft "sea" sound in your throat.
  5. Pause for a moment, then breathe out slowly with the same soft throat sound.
  6. Repeat 12 times.

Benefits

  • Calms the mind and improves focus
  • Relaxes the chest muscles
  • Balances all three doshas
