Eat for Your Body Type: A Simple Ayurvedic Diet Guide for Vata, Pitta and Kapha

In English

One Diet Does Not Fit All

Your friend may lose weight on a salad diet while you feel bloated and cold on it. Ayurveda explains why: the right food depends on your body type. Food can be heavy or light, oily or dry, heating or cooling, and each quality affects each dosha differently.

Think of It as a Guide, Not a Strict Rule

  • Foods that suit your dosha bring balance. Foods that don't suit it can increase imbalance.
  • If a food is not ideal for you, you don't have to ban it. Eat it less often, in small amounts, or cook it in a way that balances it.
  • Example: raw apples can disturb Vata, but cooked apple with a little ghee, cinnamon or cardamom suits Vata well.

Your Plate by Body Type

VATA Plate (Warm, Moist, Grounding)

  • About 50% whole grains: cooked rice, wheat, oats, daliya
  • About 20% protein: dairy, urad and masoor dal, eggs if you eat them
  • 20 to 30% cooked vegetables, plus a little sweet fruit
  • Favour: warm, cooked, slightly oily food with ghee
  • Limit: raw salads, dry snacks, cold food and drinks

PITTA Plate (Cool, Calm, Not Spicy)

  • About 50% whole grains: rice, wheat, barley
  • About 20% protein: moong dal, chana, paneer, milk
  • 20 to 30% vegetables, plus sweet, juicy fruits
  • Favour: cooling, mildly spiced, fresh food
  • Limit: chilli, very sour, salty, fried and fermented food

KAPHA Plate (Light, Warm, Dry)

  • 30 to 40% light grains: millets like bajra and jowar, barley, a little rice
  • About 20% protein: most beans and lentils like moong, masoor, chana
  • 40 to 50% vegetables, especially leafy greens. A daily salad is fine for Kapha.
  • Favour: light, warm, well-spiced food
  • Limit: heavy dairy, sweets, fried food, cold drinks

Remember the Seasons

  • Summer: everyone, especially Pitta, should cut down on hot, spicy food.
  • Autumn: everyone, especially Vata, should avoid dry, cold and raw foods.
  • Winter and early spring: everyone, especially Kapha, should avoid ice cream, cold drinks, curd and heavy cheese.

Mixed Body Type?

Many people are a mix, like Vata-Pitta. Simple rule: follow the guide for the dosha that matches the season. For example, eat Vata-balancing food in autumn and Pitta-balancing food in summer.

Try This Today

Look at your lunch plate. Does it match your body type? Make one small swap, like cooked vegetables instead of raw salad for Vata, or less chilli for Pitta.
