High Blood Pressure: Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle Support Alongside Your Doctor

In English

Important: High blood pressure is a serious condition that needs a doctor's care. Use these tips to SUPPORT your treatment, never to replace it. Do not stop or reduce your BP medicine without your doctor's advice.

What Ayurveda Says About High BP

Ayurveda links high blood pressure to all three doshas:

  • VATA: narrowing and stiffening of blood vessels, often with age, stress and anxiety
  • PITTA: blood flowing with too much force and heat, often with anger and intensity
  • KAPHA: thick blood and fatty build-up in the arteries

Stress, anger and anxiety can raise BP quickly. Even a visit to the doctor can push it up, which is called "white coat" BP.

1. Cut the Salt

Reduce salt, including pickles, papad, chips, namkeen and packaged foods. Also avoid fried, fatty and very spicy food.

2. BP-Friendly Foods

  • Moong dal soup with fresh coriander, cumin and a pinch of turmeric
  • Cucumber raita: cucumber is naturally cooling and a mild diuretic
  • Watermelon with a pinch of cardamom and coriander powder
  • Coconut water and fresh fruits
  • Plenty of vegetables, whole grains and leafy greens
  • Garlic in daily cooking
If you have kidney disease or take certain BP medicines, ask your doctor before having a lot of potassium-rich drinks like coconut water and orange juice.

3. Morning Honey-Lime Water

A cup of warm water with 1 tsp honey and a few drops of lime or apple cider vinegar is a traditional morning drink. People with diabetes should skip the honey.

4. Relax Deeply: Shavasana

Lie flat on your back, arms by your sides. Watch your breath. Notice the tiny natural pause after each in-breath and out-breath, and rest quietly in those pauses. Practise for 10 to 15 minutes daily.

5. Meditate Daily

Regular meditation is known to help lower blood pressure. Try So-Hum or the Empty Bowl Meditation for 15 minutes, twice a day.

6. Cooling Breath and Gentle Yoga

  • Shitali pranayama (cooling breath): gentle, a few rounds daily
  • Alternate Nostril breathing without holding the breath
  • Moon Salutation and Yoga Mudra
  • Avoid: headstands, heavy weightlifting, Bhastrika and intense exercise unless your doctor approves
  • Walk for 30 minutes daily at a comfortable pace

7. Stay Cool

Avoid hard work in the hot sun. Manage anger and stress, which are major Pitta triggers.

Ayurveda uses herbs like Arjuna, Jatamansi, Punarnava and Brahmi to support heart health. Herbs can interact with BP medicines, so please take them only under your doctor's and an Ayurvedic practitioner's guidance.
