Indigestion? Wake Up Your Digestive Fire (Agni) the Ayurvedic Way

In English

Indigestion Starts With a Weak Agni

Ayurveda says good health depends on strong digestion. When your digestive fire (Agni) is weak, food is not digested properly, leading to heaviness, gas, bloating, acidity, nausea or loose motions. Common causes:

  • Overeating or eating heavy, dense food
  • Emotional eating, when you eat without real hunger
  • Wrong food combinations, like banana with milk or melon with meals
  • Cold drinks with food

4 Ways to Kindle Your Digestive Fire

1. Ginger Appetiser

Before each meal, chew a thin slice of fresh ginger with a pinch of salt and a few drops of lime.

2. Garlic-Jeera Starter

Mix 1 small chopped garlic clove + ¼ tsp cumin powder + a pinch of rock salt + a pinch of Trikatu + 1 tsp lime juice. Take before lunch or dinner.

3. Bay Leaf Tea

Steep ½ tsp crushed tej patta (bay leaf) in a cup of hot water for 10 minutes. Add a pinch of cardamom and drink after eating.

4. Digestive Buttermilk (Takra)

Blend 4 tsp fresh curd in 1 cup water with 2 pinches each of dry ginger and roasted cumin. Drink at the end of lunch. Ayurveda considers takra one of the best digestive drinks.

When You Already Have Indigestion

  • Give your stomach a rest: skip a meal or eat very lightly. Ayurveda sees a short fast as a natural way to rekindle Agni.
  • Pineapple juice: 1 cup fresh pineapple juice with a pinch of ginger and black pepper.
  • Lime-soda fizz: juice of ¼ lime in warm water, add ½ tsp baking soda just before drinking. Use only occasionally, and avoid it if you have high BP or kidney problems.
  • Sip warm water through the day.

10 Tips to Prevent Indigestion

  1. Eat only when truly hungry.
  2. Don't eat for emotional reasons.
  3. 2 to 3 meals a day, with no constant snacking.
  4. No ice-cold drinks with or after meals.
  5. Fill your stomach ⅓ food, ⅓ liquid, ⅓ empty.
  6. Chew well. Digestion starts in the mouth.
  7. Sip warm water during meals.
  8. Avoid wrong food combinations.
  9. Finish lunch with a small glass of spiced buttermilk.
  10. Walk 100 slow steps after meals (a traditional Indian practice called shatapavali).

Yoga for Digestion

  • Vajrasana for 5 minutes after meals
  • Leg raises and Pawanmuktasana (on an empty stomach)
  • Bhastrika breathing to stoke the digestive fire, if it is safe for you

See a Doctor If

  • Indigestion is frequent or lasts more than 2 weeks
  • You have difficulty swallowing, weight loss or loss of appetite
  • You vomit blood or have black stools
  • You feel pain spreading to the chest, arm or jaw, or breathlessness. This could be the heart, so call emergency services.
  • You are over 50 and indigestion is new
