Winter and Spring the Ayurvedic Way: Beat Colds, Cough and Heaviness
In English
The KAPHA Seasons
Winter is cold, cloudy, damp and heavy. Life slows down. In spring, the warmth starts to melt the Kapha stored in the body during winter, just as snow melts on mountains. That is why so many people catch colds, cough, sinus and allergies in early spring.
The main rule: KEEP WARM, KEEP MOVING, EAT LIGHT.
WINTER Guide
Winter Morning
- No need to wake very early in deep winter. Around 7 AM is fine, unless work needs you earlier.
- Do yoga that opens the chest: Sun Salutations, Fish, Locust, Boat, Bow, Lion and Camel poses.
- Practise Bhastrika (Breath of Fire) to clear Kapha, followed by quiet meditation.
- Massage with warm sesame oil and take a hot shower. Sesame oil suits all body types in winter.
Winter Food
- Breakfast: oats, barley soup, khichdi or poha
- Lunch: whole-wheat roti, steamed vegetables and hot soup with ghee
- Digestive fire is strong in winter, so this is the season for more nourishing food
Winter Warming Tea
Boil ½ tsp dry ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon and a pinch of clove in a cup of water for 5 minutes. It warms the body, supports circulation and helps clear mucus.
Skip this tea if you have ulcers or severe acidity, as it is very heating.
Winter Lifestyle
- Always cover your head, neck and ears outdoors. The body loses a lot of heat from the head.
- Wear bright, warm colours like red and orange.
- No daytime naps in winter; they slow digestion and increase Kapha.
- Grey winter days can bring loneliness and low mood. Stay close to loved ones and keep active.
- At night, rub sesame oil on your scalp and soles.
- Traditional winter herbs: ginger, black pepper, pippali, mulethi (licorice) and Chyavanprash.
SPRING Guide
The King of Seasons
Spring is the season of celebration: flowers bloom, energy rises and people love to be outdoors. But it is also the season of colds, hay fever and allergies, especially for Kapha people.
Spring Food
Favour
- Bitter, spicy and astringent tastes
- Lentils and pulses: masoor, chana, yellow split peas
- Radish, spinach, bhindi, onion and garlic
- Ginger and black pepper (Vata and Pitta people should not overdo hot spices)
- A cup of warm (not hot) water with a teaspoon of honey helps balance Kapha
Avoid
- Heavy, oily, sweet, sour and salty foods
- Dairy, especially in the morning
- Ice cream and cold drinks
Ayurveda Tip: Never cook or heat honey. Add it only to warm water or food.
Spring Lifestyle
- Wake up early and go for a morning walk.
- Do Sun Salutations and chest-opening poses.
- Practise Bhastrika breathing.
- Avoid daytime sleep.
- Sip CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel) or ginger, black pepper and cinnamon tea after meals.
